EuroHPC JU Launches Major Quantum Infrastructure Investment to Secure Europe’s Quantum Future

Europe’s Quantum Leap: EuroHPC JU Unveils Strategic Infrastructure Investment

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking has announced a broad investment program to build out Europe’s quantum infrastructure, funding projects that span computing hardware, secure communications and production-grade testing. Backed by Horizon Europe resources, the initiative targets projects running for roughly 3.5 years with applications due in November 2026 and represents a multi-million euro commitment to strengthen European capabilities.

Advancing Quantum Computing Platforms

Funding prioritizes full-stack quantum systems designed to reach operational scales beyond current lab prototypes. Targets include machines with 1,000+ qubits for general computing and platforms scaled to 10,000 qubits for specialized quantum simulation workloads. The call explicitly supports three core technologies: trapped-ion, superconducting, and neutral-atom systems. Proposals that couple these quantum devices to cloud access and integrate them with classical high performance computing environments will be scored highly, reflecting a push toward hybrid workflows and user-accessible services.

Fortifying Secure Communications with Next-Gen QKD

EuroHPC JU funding also covers advanced Quantum Key Distribution systems aimed at higher key rates and wider regional coverage. Projects are encouraged to demonstrate interoperable QKD links and hybrid quantum-classical cryptographic frameworks that can coexist with existing network infrastructure. The goal is to deliver deployable QKD solutions for government and industry users across Europe.

Building Robust Quantum Infrastructure: Testing and Pilot Lines

To move technologies from lab to market, the program will create a pan-European open-access testing infrastructure for validation and certification of components and systems. Experimental pilot lines are being funded to bridge academic research and industrial manufacturing, with emphasis on repeatability, scalability and supply chain readiness.

The Broader Vision: Europe’s Quantum Future

The combined investment signals a strategic push for technological independence and global competitiveness. By funding multiple platforms, secure networks and manufacturing pathways in parallel, EuroHPC JU aims to shorten the timeline from research to production and to position Europe as a reliable provider of quantum infrastructure.

For companies, labs and investors, the initiative is a clear signal to align roadmaps with Europe’s long term quantum strategy and to take part in collaborative projects that will define the continent’s role in the coming quantum era.
