Singapore Military Harnesses Quantum for Mission Planning

The Singapore Armed Forces, working through the Digital and Intelligence Service and the Defence Science and Technology Agency, has begun testing quantum computing with IBM to address complex mission planning tasks. Early work focuses on logistics optimization: routing supplies, scheduling assets and balancing multiple constraints under uncertainty.

Unlocking Complex Defense Logistics

Military logistics problems grow exponentially as variables increase. Classical algorithms perform well on many cases but can stall when routes, timing windows and resource limits multiply. Military Expert 7 Guo Jinghua observed, “Classical systems struggle when routes and constraints multiply exponentially. Quantum approaches could offer more scalable solutions.” Quantum algorithms and hybrid quantum-classical workflows may provide new ways to search vast solution spaces faster for specific problem classes.

Strategic Implications and Q-Day Readiness

The work has dual strategic value. Operationally, faster, higher-quality mission plans can improve responsiveness and resource use. On the security front, quantum advancement raises awareness of Q-Day, when powerful quantum computers could break prevalent public-key cryptography. Singapore’s effort runs alongside post-quantum cryptography programs to protect communications and maintain readiness for cryptographic transition.

Building National Quantum Capability

Beyond immediate experiments, the program aims to develop local expertise and a rigorous assessment of when quantum methods outperform conventional approaches. IBM provides hardware access and algorithmic support while SAF, DIS and DSTA contribute operational scenarios and domain knowledge. The collaboration is framed around responsible innovation: integrating AI where appropriate, keeping humans in control, and prioritizing verifiable results before operational deployment.
