UK Launches Quantum Standards Network to Secure Global Lead

UK’s Quantum Standards Network: A Strategic Leap

The UK has launched the Quantum Standards Network (QSN), a national effort led by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) with a £10 million investment from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). The QSN will develop measurement, testing and standards frameworks across quantum computing, communications, sensing and timing to accelerate commercial deployment and secure the UK’s role in setting international rules.

Forging Future Quantum Frameworks

Standards create trust between developers, customers and regulators. For quantum technologies this means agreed benchmarks for device performance, interoperable protocols, and verified calibration methods that industry and labs can adopt. The QSN will coordinate technical requirements, test methods and reference materials so companies can move from prototypes to products with predictable performance and market access.

QSN’s Three Core Directives

  • Skills and education: building measurement expertise and training a workforce that understands quantum metrology and standards practice.
  • International leadership: representing UK interests in ISO, IEC and other global forums to influence international standards and trade conditions.
  • Industry support and coordination: providing testbeds, reference data and guidance to SMEs and large firms to reduce technical barriers to adoption.

UK’s Global Quantum Ambition

The QSN is a targeted step within the UK’s National Quantum Strategy. By anchoring standards domestically and projecting influence internationally, the UK aims to protect market access and intellectual property while unlocking investment. Government projections for the sector include up to £212 billion in economic value and as many as 100,000 jobs over time. For researchers, investors and policymakers, the QSN signals a shift from capability building to market readiness and regulatory shaping.

The QSN positions the UK to define how quantum systems are measured, compared and certified, a practical lever for sustaining competitive advantage as global markets form.
